THON Mail Call Package Assembly Workshop

Sunday, February 4 at 1:30 pm
Thoroughbred Crossing Club House
3301 Shellers Bend, State College

Every THON dancer since 2012 has received at least one package during Mail Call, thanks to the Centre County Chapter’s dancer package drive. We look forward to continuing that tradition this year.

On Sunday, February 4 we will fill boxes with toys, puzzles, games, and notes to lift the dancers’ sprits. The process takes only a couple hours, and we’ll be finished well before kickoff of the Super Bowl. Hope to see you there!

Penn State Board of Trustees Nominations

The Centre County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association encourages you to get involved in the PSU Board of Trustees election process. Hopefully, by now you have received a nomination ballot for the 2018 election. Nominations must be submitted by Sunday, February 25, 2018.

If you have not received a ballot, you can request one by visiting the trustee website at: election/index.html
or call the BOT office 814-865-2521.

The contact persons are:
Janine Andrews-Director , Office of the BOT/Associate Secretary
Thomas Penkala-Associate Director
Ann Wyatt-Administrative Assistant
Shelly Zeigler-Byers- Staff Assistant

Look for details about the actual election in the next newsletter.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities:

We are still in need of some volunteers for the Penn State Undergraduate Admissions Office Accepted Students Program. The Centre County Chapter has a strong history of providing wonderfully enthusiastic volunteers to welcome our accepted students into the Penn State family.

After prospective students receive an offer of admission, the best way to see if Penn State is the place for them, is to attend one of the Accepted Students    Programs presented by Penn State Undergraduate Admissions. Even if they have already visited campus, it is a different experience when they have received an offer of admission. Penn State Undergraduate Admissions encourages them to visit to get a better idea of what life might be like as a Penn State student.

There are still a few unfilled slots in February, several in March, and a lot in April. For more information, contact Marti Duffy at

Flu shots, Tamiflu recommended by health officials as flu season continues

Stay healthy by following tips to reduce risks of spreading illness
January 19, 2018

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The spread of the flu continues through the winter months, and health officials at Penn State strongly recommend the antiviral medication Tamiflu for those at high risk for flu complications. Tamiflu is available at the University Health Services Pharmacy on the University Park campus. At this time, UHS is able to meet the demand for services for students who are diagnosed with the flu.

Students are especially at risk for respiratory illnesses because of constant exposure through common living spaces, classrooms, shared restrooms and social activities.

Stay healthy during flu season

During cold and flu season, students should be exceptionally mindful of their personal health and hygiene routines. Following the tips below may limit the spread of germs and prevent illness on campus.

— Cover your mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing; use your upper sleeve to cover your cough, not your hand.

— Wash hands frequently and efficiently. Students should wash hands with warm water and soap for 15-20 seconds (two rounds of the “Happy Birthday” song). When unable to wash with soap and water students should use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

— Avoid sharing food and drinks, engaging in drinking games, or participating in other activities that may result in saliva exposure.

— Stay home from school or work when you are sick to rest and limit the spread of illness to others.

Further information about flu symptoms, prevention and treatment can be found on the University Health Services website.

Flu vaccine still available

An annual flu vaccine is the first and most important step in preventing flu viruses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

President Barron Calls on Penn Staters to Contact Legislators

Penn State President Eric Barron is asking the University community to write to their legislators in light of the extended state budget stalemate in Harrisburg.

One of the hallmarks of Penn State’s partnership with the Commonwealth has been an annual appropriation, which directly benefits thousands of Pennsylvania families by keeping tuition rates lower for Pennsylvania students.

However, as state leaders continue to negotiate a revenue package to fund the Commonwealth’s operations, the state’s ability to fund Penn State and its fellow public institutions of higher education has come into question.

Absent a state appropriation, Barron indicated that the in-state tuition rate would be in jeopardy, and the University’s ability to conduct vital research and provide extension education and health services for the Commonwealth’s citizens would be compromised.

President Barron is encouraging Penn State community members to speak up for Penn State funding. For full details, visit
