3. GIVING TUESDAY – As 2015 comes to an end, consider a tax deductible donation to our Centre County Chapter Emergency Grant Fund (Code SXXA2). The Centre County Chapter established the Emergency Grant Fund to help reduce the financial stress for all Penn State students facing unforeseeable hardships and help to complete their studies. There are no residency restrictions or other stipulations to receive emergency aid. CCCPAA is the only Penn State Alumni Association affiliate group to provide this type of assistance to Penn State students in need. With the high cost of education and economic conditions of recent years, the number of requests for emergency assistance has greatly increased.

Some of the Centre County Chapter Emergency Grants awarded in 2014 helped our students with the following items:

  • Funding for the purchase of books
  • Replace a computer and personal belongings stolen or damaged
  • Assist numerous students in covering health care costs
  • Cover shortages in funds to buy food for the semester
  • Help pay for cap and gown costs for graduating seniors
  • Cover auto repairs to cover transportation to and from classes or work
  • Help with tuition shortfalls
  • Provide funds to travel home for family emergencies

These are just a few of the many requests made against our emergency grant fund. The more money we can raise the more students with dire emergency needs can be helped. If you are looking for that end of 2015 tax deduction, please consider giving to the Centre County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association Emergency Grant fund.

The fund makes a major difference and helps eliminate some stress for many students so that they can succeed in their studies and successes at Penn State. WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY? #Giving Tuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

The Centre County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association will match 10% of all donations raised up to $5000 on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. If you donate online at the GIVING TUESDAY web site go to Penn State Alumni Association and enter the Centre County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association Emergency Grant Fund Code SXXA2 into the other box or make a check payable to CCCPSAA in note area mark for Emergency Grant Fund and mail to:

3.       PENN STATE BAKERY TOUR – Friday, June 20, 2014 at 10:00 A.M.  Just how do they make those delicious famous Penn State chocolate chip cookies as well as the many other yummy baked goods we have at Penn State events and on campus?  Join fellow chapter members for  a tour of the  Penn State Bakery.  We’re sure the tour will whet your appetite and have you looking for a glass of milk to go with those chocolate chip cookies!”  Parking is very limited and the area is permit parking only.  It is suggested that we park at either the East Deck or Arboretum parking lots and walk to the bakery area.  The bakery is located in the yellow brick Housing and Food Services building across from the Arboretum and behind the Katz Law Building.  Contact Ilene White at igw2@psu.edu  to reserve a place on the tour as space is limited.

4.       SPRING GARDEN PLANTING PARTY – The Centre County Chapter Penn State Alumni Associations’ Community Garden planting date is set for Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 9:30am.  The location is the University Drive off ramp to East College Ave (on the State College side; the best approach is from the Stadium side on University Drive).  Parking is on the clover leaf.  We are inviting Tailback Club members to join us after their meeting.  Tools & equipment provided, but bring your gloves and your favorite trowel if you prefer.  Rain or shine, so be prepared.  There are hundreds of plants to be planted so please let Mr. Green Finger (aka Al Landis) know if you can make it imabl2u@verizon.net  or 814-237-1147 (day or evening).  A light snack and water will be provided.  The more hands the quicker we all get to our day’s activities.

5.       CHAPTER HAPPY HOUR – At Clem’s Roadside Bar & Grill,  1405 S. Atherton St. State College (Formerly  Autoport Grill) on Friday, June 13, 2014 from  5:30p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Join your fellow Chapter members for a fun evening on the patio at Clem’s.

6.       WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOME GREAT CHAPTER VOLUNTEERS again to answer phones at WPSU- It’s CCCPSAA night Thursday, June 5 during ‘The Grateful Dead – Dead Ahead’ at WPSU from 7:30 PM to 10 PM.  We’ll have fun enjoying the food & music….and maybe even wearing that tie-dye shirt a lot of us have somewhere in the house.   Please join us for a fun night with complimentary dinner, a gift for everyone while we enjoy taking calls and watching a new program.  Please contact Dale Hoffman at dhoff128@comcast.net  or call 814-234-0656 to volunteer.  We would like to get 9 volunteers.  Directions: WPSU is at 120 Outreach Building, located in Innovation Park. The Outreach building is on Innovation Blvd. (Same as the Penn Stater Conference Ctr.& Hotel) Outreach building is at the east end on the right of Innovation Blvd. and there are about 5 satellite dishes in the grass on one side.

7.       SPEND A SUMMER DAY UPDATE – Training dates have been set for  SASD Thursday, July 17, 2014 and Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Mountain View Country Club.   Spend a Summer Day  dates are: Friday, July 25, 2014; Monday, July 28th; Thursday, July 31st; Friday, August 1st; Monday, August 4, 2014.  Linda Rohrer will provide more information in the coming weeks for all of the “veteran” and new volunteers.  If you have never participated in being a volunteer for this program, you are missing out on a wonderful opportunity to showcase Penn State to prospective students.  Contact Linda at lcrohrer@verizon.net  to be included in future mailings.

8.       BUTTONS, BUTTONS, WHO HAS BUTTONS????? – Spring cleaning is upon us.  When cleaning out those closets, storage areas and drawers look for old football buttons to donate to CCCPSAA.  The chapter can use those from 1999 and earlier.  We are swamped with buttons  dated from 2,000 to present, and storage space is limited.  However, we can always use bowl buttons regardless of their vintage.  You may contact Don Miller at dmillerpsu@comcast.net  or call at home 234-3719  or cell 574-4884 and Don will make arrangements to have them picked up.   Last year over $2000 for our scholarship funds was collected from donations made by those who stopped by our Welcome Booth.   Thanks for your consideration!  WE ARE……………………..
