The background and the details……………
In 2000 my friends and I started a small youth soccer tournament, Kicks 4 Kids, to raise money for charity. We started with 4 teams in 2000 and have since grown to over 300 teams in two towns. Each tournament donates 100% of the proceeds to youth based charities. The Penn State 8v8 tournament raises money for non-profit organizations in Centre County including children’s programs of the United Way and Easter Seals of Central Pennsylvania.
The teams that play in the tournament are much like little league baseball teams. They are not affiliated with schools, but rather a soccer club and range in age from 9 to 19. These teams all play soccer in a regular Fall or Spring league and then choose one or two summer tournaments to travel to as a team and compete against teams from other areas. The Penn State Tournament mainly draws teams from Pennsylvania.
The Penn State 8v8 takes place on the campus of Penn State on the intramural fields at the intersection of Park and University Drive.
To date, the tournaments have raised over $350,000. Kicks 4 Kids is a IRS registered non-profit organization and employees one part-time employee.
The Penn State 8v8 tournament will host over 135 youth soccer teams bringing an estimated 2400 visitors to State College. We need at least 84 volunteers to help make it a success. We need YOUR help!
When: August 1-2, 2015: State College, PA
You don’t need to know anything about soccer or be able to stay the entire weekend in order to have fun and be a great help!
The single biggest need to help the tournament run smoothly is a quality team of field managers. (We call them field marshals).
Here is a job description:
Sit at a field under a tent, flip a coin before a game, radio in scores, radio when trash cans need to be emptied, radio in when water coolers need to be filled, get the referees anything they need, radio site director if parents get out of hand (basically be a general presence of authority).
If you are working over lunch or dinner a meal will be provided. Otherwise, snacks, Gatorade and water will be provided.
We will train you on everything you need to know before we send you to your field.
When you arrive at the PSU intramural fields on Park Ave/University Drive, look for the big white headquarters tent. Ask for Ben or Becca Eltz and we will get you set up.
Please arrive at the headquarters tent at your shift start time. Please allow time for traffic/parking/walking.
Please forward this email to anyone you think might be interested in helping. Also, your friends, family, pets, etc. are more than welcome to travel & volunteer as a group. Our volunteers are almost exclusively made up of friends of friends – so I am sure you will find the group relaxed and enjoyable
